.An image diffuser was used to create art by writing words into a computer mange times, until a good result came out. Then it was submitted to a competition and won a price. People are all up in arms about it and calling it cheating and posting the most ridiculous comparisons to sell the idea that this is bad.
If it was against the rules then it is cheating, however in this case it was ruled upon , and thus it is not cheating. Besides, using an algorithm to create aesthetically pleasing art is a costly and time consuming process, not too different from pouring paint on a canvas.
The solution to a competition is simple really, be more clear about the rules and stipulate how much modification is needed to submit a generated picture.
The AI is a tool that takes a phrase and spews out a result to the best of its ability, which requires a lot of refinement to become aesthetically pleasing and coherent.
When it comes to the idea of what art is, I dare say it becomes art when put on display. Even if the duct tape banana on a white wall sucks. Or we're talking about that infamous red square, not to mention the toilet on the wall, and the cow cut in half. It is all considered art and it is somewhat debatable if it is. However art is highly subjective when it comes to how much a person likes what they see.As for the system itself, artificial intelligence art is just another tool in the artist repertoire. To me it is not any different from using a random prompt generator to print out some ideas to work with. Inspiration does not randomly strike from nothing after all.AI has many limitations for now at least. One is size. It takes system resources to upscale the result. From my limited experience it does not handle human faces in any meaningful manner. Like all automated experiences, careful wording and a lot of tweaking is needed to produce a decent result. Putting the cart before the horse is quite different from putting the horse in Front of the cart after all.The cost of creating the artwork is fairly steep at the moment as well, because it requires a good graphics card. Meanwhile browser based services have a buy credits system and many, many rules. Such as nothing lewd, violent, famous persons and such. Yes, Vladimir Putin can not be plotted into the system without getting a warning. Besides all of that, the result needs a human to touch it up and refine the soulless result.I dare say, it is not cheating and it is fun to play with, but without the human element, it is rubbish, just like negative internet trolls. On the profession suffer of things, as long as the desired result is achieved, I have succeeded. However if the art is done by hand, I'm usually much more impressed and amazed. As a final note, it will not replace furry artist any time soon.
